Killer Asteroid On Course To Strike Earth

They checked the calculations and re-checked them again. Yet the terrible truth refused to go away. The cold, deadly numbers stared back at them from their computer printouts. So little doubt remained the United Nations Action Team of concerned scientists scrambled to issue an emergency warning that asteroid 2011 AG5 is going to impact Earth and could cause the explosive death of millions...



Death 'star' approaches
The 28-year countdown clock has started and it may be ticking away the seconds of life remaining to unsuspecting millions. That's the worry some anguished scientists have as recent study of near-Earth objects has confirmed that asteroid 011 AG5 has a high possibility of striking Earth a deadly blow in 2040.

Calles for a "Situational Awareness system" have become more strident to the point where some Russian scientists have gone on record demanding an Earth defense network be established among space-capable nations immediately.

Ferevent discussions about the latest asteroid threat to Earth dominated the Vienna conference of the 49th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.



Target: Earth

A window that an asteroid must pass through in orbits previous to an impact event is called a "keyhole." Several keyholes exist for three other asteroids besides 2011 AG5. One of those asteroids is a continent killer, the other two—like 2011 AG5—are city killers.

Despite Russian scientist's mounting concern, NASA's JPL Near-Earth Object (NEO) Observations Program chief, Donald Yeomans of NASA's, played down the probability of an impact. Yeomans told Leonard David of SPACE.com that "Although this keyhole is considerably larger than the Apophis keyhole in 2029, it would still be a straightforward task to alter the asteroid’s trajectory enough to miss the keyhole—and hence the impact in 2040."

The scientist's reference to to the extremely dangerous asteroid, Apophis, is one that Russian astrophysicists believe will impact Earth in either 2029 or 2036. NASA dismisses their concern. Apophis is the Greek name for the ancient Egyptian demongod Apep, also called the Uncreator.

"The prudent course of action," Yeomans added, "is then to wait at least until the 2013 observations are processed before making any preliminary plans for a potential deflection mission."



Ocean strike could be devastating

If 2011 AG5 hits the ocean, an incredible tsunami as big as 1,000 feet high traveling at near supersonic speeds would devastate coastlines of continents. Within hours, millions could die. The economy of the entire world would suffer. Most nations would be plunges into deep recessions within weeks.


Coastal regions would be inundated

Global commerce would slow to a snail's pace and violent storms could whip the planet for months. A land impact would not have such widespread devastation, but depending on the region hit the destruction could be horrific.



City annihilated 'like nuclear blast'

A major city hit by 2011 AG5 would be annihilated. Most buildings and people would be instantly vaporized. The kinetic force of the strike would convert to pure energy within milliseconds and detonate with a force as great as a multi-megaton nuclear bomb—much worse than the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombs dropped in Japan.

Evacuation of a city would be nearly impossible as the impact could not be calculated with accuracy until mere hours before the event. When the impact occurred it would be one of the greatest human calamaties in history.

Asteroid impact would set off raging 'fire hurricanes'

Massive firestorms, earthquakes, catastrophic environmental destruction as far as one hundred miles away with fierce fire hurricanes approaching speeds of hundreds of miles per hour.



Other asteroid threats now converging
Three other huge asteroids are barreling through space on a rendezvous with Earth. Because of their speed and mass a few could release the energy of 100s of thermonuclear bombs.

Asteroid tracking programs of NEOs are still an inexact science. Some astronomers admit if one of the really big NEOs blindsides us and approaches from behind the sun, on a collision trajectory with Earth, by the time the thing's discovered only weeks will remain to stop it. Of course, with so little time remaining nothing could be done except to make final arrangements for the end of the world and the abrupt passing of the human race.

Tens of thousands of asteroids and comets haunt the space ways, some changing their orbits every time they pass near a large gravitational field like one of the outer gas giants or swing close by the sun. Their orbits are often changeable and unpredictable. Those marked as hazardous to the health of the human race are tagged as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHA). Many PHAs exist—completely unknown and invisible. Some of those could be larger than Pluto.

What's really frightening is no one knows where they are, how many exist or when they might show up unannounced. What is known? Other than 2011 AG5, three other PHAs are heading towards Earth. At this moment we have no technology to stop them.



Threat number one

Asteroid 2002 NT7 arrives February 1, 2019: This continent killer is 1.5 miles long. It's been called by some observers the most threatening asteroid ever detected. Initial calculations of its preliminary orbit reveals it's on a collision course with Earth. Although the permutations of its orbit could change, nothing is certain in this game of cosmic billiards. When it was discovered, astronomers assigned the killer a threat rating of +0.06. That rating on the Palermo technical scale—a risk assessment of asteroid and comet impact with Earth—awards NT7 the dubious distinction of being the first asteroid ever to be given a positive value.

Positive for the asteroid, a big, big negative for Earth. It's size and speed are calculated as meeting the threshold needed to vaporize an entire continent. The asteroid's orbit takes 837 days traveling from the distance of the Martian orbit to just within the Earth's orbit. As of this writing, it's due to meet up with Earth in less than 8 short years. Will it hit? Although the likelihood's shrinking, it's still possible.



Threat number two
Asteroid Apophis arrives 2036: It's a potential city killer like 2011 AG5. Apophis is 1,000 feet across. Approximately the size of the asteroid that exploded in the sky above the Siberian Tunguska forest during 1908, Apophis exceddingly dangerous. London, Moscow or New York could be vaporized by it. Russian scientists are convinced that Apophis is going to hit Earth in 2036. NASA says no. But the Russians think NASA's wrong and called major conferences to address the problem of Apophis and other PHAs like NT7. The Russians are hoping that the European Space Agency will work with them to develop a program to intercept PHAs and steer them away from Earth while there's still time. The alternative, they argue, is almost too frightening to contemplate: millions dead, the Earth's climate destroyed, or the planet itself wiped out with mass extinction.

Although Apophis cannot cause the end of life on Earth it can cause the biggest disaster in history. Impact on land would be bad enough. If it hits a body of water—the Atlantic Ocean for example—the titanic energy released will generate a supersonic tsunami a thousand feet high. If it impacted the north Atlantic much of the East Coast of the U.S. could be destroyed. To the east, the UK and coastline of Northern Europe would be swept away. Will it hit? Although NASA says it's unlikely, the Russians insist it probably will impact.



Threat number three
Asteroid 1999 RQ36 arrives 2082. It's another big city killer being 1,837 feet across. According to Maria Eugenia Sansaturio and astronomers from the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain, asteroid 1999 RQ36 has two very good chances to hit Earth during the year 2082. Sansaturio and her colleagues are shocked. Until recently they thought the asteroid would miss Earth by a wide margin on both of the approaches during 2082. Will it hit? The latest calculations increase the odds it will.



The world killers
Nothing yet has been tracked in the solar system that's the size of the deadly asteroid that created the Chicxulub crater in Mexico and wiped out the dinosaurs.

Yet that doesn't mean that someone, somewhere might not spot a giant PHA tomorrow—or the day after that—a leviathan tumbling through space that has the name "Earth" written across it like a gigantic tombstone.



Russians demand Earth asteroid deflection program now
Ever since the the Russian news agency, Ria Novosti, reported that Russian space scientists are very concerned over the prospects of asteroid Apophis striking Earth, much talk has erupted in some European scientific circles over the likelihood of such a disaster happening any time in the foreseeable future.

While the Russians insist the odds are high that the 1,000-foot rock will slam into the Earth—perhaps taking out a whole city of millions when it hits—the U.S. space agency NASA argues their figures show only a one in 250,000 chance of such a calamity occurring.



Yet the lead astronomer in the Russian group that met in a July 2011 conference concerning the asteroid threat to Earth, Professor Leonid Sokolov of the St. Petersburg State University, stated what NASA already knows: sooner or later one of those tumbling space rocks will hit Earth. When it does only its mass and speed will determine how much damage it will cause.

The Russians want a unified asteroid deflection program that's well funded and equipped. They believe that someday it may mean the difference between the survival of the human race or its extinction.

The dinosaurs—the most successful species ever to walk the Earth—had 200 million years to build an asteroid deflection program. They failed to evolve quickly enough and the universe wiped them out.

The human race has only been around about one percent of the time the dinosaurs had, but humans have evolved much faster. Hopefully, that evolution includes enough intelligence to accomplish what the dinosaurs were unable to do: protect the species from the dangers that roam Earth's backyard.



Time growing short
As the months progressed towards the asteroid summit chaired by the Russians, other astrophysicists and astronomers are added their thoughts.

Daniele Farigon a physicist at the Farigon of the University of Rome, proposes using nuclear powered mass-driver rockets to steer the space rock anywhere desperate Earth folk wanted it to go. She doesn't say exactly where the asteroid or comet should be ferried to…perhaps into the sun? It couldn't do any harm there.

Other visionaries have other visions. Some want to attach giant solar sails or change asteroid and comet orbits using gentle nudges. Everyone agrees that trying to blow it up with an atom bomb would be a very bad idea, Bruce Willis and Armageddon notwithstanding.


Russians meeting on asteroid dangers

At the conference, the European Commission considered Roscosmos's proposal to create a joint agency specifically tasked to establish a workable asteroid deflection program.

When asked if the idea really smacked of science fiction, Anatoly Perminov, the head of the Russian Federal Space Agency Roscosm, responded, “People’s lives are at stake. We should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow us to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen and kill hundreds of thousands of people.”

In the meantime, four clocks are now counting down towards the keyholes of four asteroids. Time grows shorter.

A photocopy of a single page from the handwritten ancient manuscript is thought to be worth £1.5million.

Turkish culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay said the book could be an authentic version of the Gospel, which was suppressed by the Christian Church for its strong parallels with the Islamic view of Jesus. He also said the Vatican had made an official request to see the scripture - a controversial text which Muslims claim is an addition to the original gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. In line with Islamic belief, the Gospel treats Jesus as a human being and not a God.

It rejects the ideas of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion and reveals that Jesus predicted the coming of the Prophet Muhammad. In one version of the gospel, he is said to have told a priest: 'How shall the Messiah be called? Muhammad is his blessed name'. And in another Jesus denied being the Messiah, claiming that he or she would be Ishmaelite, the term used for an Arab.

Despite the interest in the newly re-discovered book, some believe it is a fake and only dates back to the 16th century. The oldest copies of the book date back to that time, and are written in Spanish and Italian. Protestant pastor İhsan Özbek said it was unlikely to be authentic. This is because St Barnabas lived in the first century and was one of the Apostles of Jesus, in contrast to this version which is said to come from the fifth or sixth century.

He told the Today Zaman newspaper: 'The copy in Ankara might have been written by one of the followers of St Barnabas. 'Since there is around 500 years in between St Barnabas and the writing of the Bible copy, Muslims may be disappointed to see that this copy does not include things they would like to see. 'It might have no relation with the content of the Gospel of Barnabas.'

Theology professor Ömer Faruk Harman said a scientific scan of the bible may be the only way to reveal how old it really is.

WHO WAS ST BARNABAS?
Born in Cyprus as Joseph, Barnabas was an Early Christian later named an apostle. His story appears in the Acts of the Apostles, and Paul mentions him in some of his epistles. The date, place, and circumstances of his death are historically unverifiable. But Christian tradition states that he was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus. He is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Church, with his feast day on June 11.

It’s not difficult to deduce that airplanes are based on birds — some of the better pilots in the animal kingdom. After 3.8 billion years and a lot of trial and error, animals have become astoundingly good at a variety of tasks (humans still take the cake in the “watching stuff and getting fat category”). As a result, the field of Biomimicry has ballooned in recent years as scientists and companies are discovering new and interesting ways to steal Nature’s intellectual property.



Bullet-Proof Skin

Probably since elementary school you’ve heard stories of the magical properties of spider silk. It’s five times the strength of steel, inspired kevlar, could be used for building mammoth suspension bridges and maybe even elevators to space, who knows? Scientists have tried several methods to reproduce spider silk on a large scale through a handful of ingenious methods, such as splicing silk-producing genes into goats to get spider-silk milk (part of a balanced breakfast). The problem is, scientists can’t seem to get these artificial silks up to the strength of the real thing. Mass-farming spiders like we do silkworms is out of the question as well, since spiders have a nasty habit of cannibalism.

By now you’re probably thinking, how can this technology be used to turn me into a terrifyingly powerful cyborg? How about nearly bullet-proof skin? By integrating spider-silk into lab-grown skin, scientists have successfully created a material capable of stopping a speeding bullet. Because this is real science and not comic-book science, there are a couple of boring caveats. The first is the bullet in the demonstration was fired at close to half speed, meaning it won’t stop anything more than low-caliber rounds fired at very long range. The second is, even if the bullet is stopped, the impact will likely shatter bones, rupture internal organs and possibly stop your heart. But combined with some modern body armor and titanium infused bones (seriously) we’re talking near-indestructible soldiers in our lifetime. Which will be handy when our robot servants get tired of fighting our wars for us.



Chimps, the Oldest Pharmacists

Chimpanzees have evolved to seek out therapeutic cures found naturally in their environment. They’re so good at it, in fact, that scientists started observing the habits of sick chimps to see if they point to any substances that might have potential benefit humans.

Unfortunately, this only works for chimpanzees, as something delicious to a house cat (like its own vomit) might be toxic (or just disgusting and pointless) for humans to consume. There’s some evidence that the technique is paying off. Recent studies have pegged the Vernonia genus of trees–a species chimps gravitate toward while sick–as effective in fighting multiple species of parasites that are harmful to humans. And the good news is that any medicine derived from this discovery is likely to be relatively devoid of side effects.



Termites are Amazing Architects


More famous for tearing buildings down, the common termite is actually superbly good at building them. In some parts of Africa, their two to three meter high mounds dot the landscape like some sort of eerie graveyard for giants. While 8 feet might not seem that impressive, relative to the termite’s size these mounds are roughly the equivalent of the Empire State Building, and there are thousands of them scattered across the savannah. What’s even more mind boggling is the termite’s ability to keep these dwellings within a single degree of 31 degrees Celsius. Anyone who has ever worked in an office can attest to this being quite a feat even with modern air conditioning.

Capitalizing on the termite’s ingenuity, scientists and architects analyzed the internal structure of the mound and modeled the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe after them. Despite being located in a country where temperatures regularly spike to over 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) during the day, the Eastgate Centre remains relatively cool. It’s unique, termite-inspired designed efficiently absorbs and vents excess heat, consuming a staggering 10% of the energy that a comparable building would. In the first five years alone, the building saved upward of $3.5 million in heating and cooling costs.



Solar Cells Based on Leaves

For a couple billion years now, plants have been converting sunlight into energy, and they’ve gotten pretty damn good at it. Their “solar cells” are tough, numerous, made of cheap materials and grow back if stripped. Compare that to human solar panels, which are expensive, unwieldy, delicate, and terribly inefficient. Scientists are hard at work developing more efficient, cheaper solar cells, but some of the most promising research for cheap, durable solar come from just straight-up copying leaves as much as possible.

A team at North Carolina State University have developed what is basically a gel-filled bag with specialized chemicals and plant bits. There’s even a bit of Chlorophyll in there for good measure. They’ve successfully coaxed the molecules in the gel into generating a weak electrical current, and hope to improve its admittedly low level of efficiency in subsequent designs. Also on the table: designing a system that allows the bags to self-repair if damaged, effectively one-upping their biological ancestors.



Self-Cleaning Surfaces

Leaves are basically the windows through which a plant receives energy. A dirty window is going to let in a lot less energy, robbing the plant of vital nutrients. You may not think about nature as a very clean place, but from the plant’s point of view, it’s absolutely essential that leaves stay clean and free of debris. And in a world without any Windex, plants have come up with an ingenious solution.

The surface of most leaves, though it may seem smooth, is actually covered in near-microscopic ridges. To simplify somewhat, this means that dirt and grime has a lot of trouble finding something to stick to, and usually ends up resting precariously on one of these ridges, to be washed off at the next rain. Once they paid enough attention to their salad material, humans replicated this technology to create self-cleaning paint. By mimicking the peaks and valleys on a leaf, this paint keeps leaves surfaces clean and dirt-free after the first rain. As an added bonus, they also create a hostile environment for bacteria and fungus, and were found to host 90% fewer germs than comparable surfaces. Now that the mechanism in plants has been isolated, companies are using it to make self-cleaning glass and concrete. 




Shells May Solve Global Warming

Usually environmental disasters involve a lack of something. A lack of habitat, a lack of clean water or a lack of pandas getting it on–whatever. Global warming, however, is caused by an over abundance of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere.

The solution is simple, elegant, and comes from disgusting, disgusting slugs. Researchers correctly noticed that shells are made mostly of calcium carbonate, or basically CO2 plus a calcium and oxygen molecules. Since mollusks are whiz-bang chemists, the reaction to convert CO2 into something that could be easily sequestered had to be relatively simple and not that energy intense. By studying mollusks, scientists discovered a way to convert harmful CO2 into solid carbonates. The best part is, unlike expensive carbon-scrubbers already in use, that solid carbonate that is produced can be re-sold as building material, allowing the system to possibly pay for itself over time.



Bees Make Excellent Managers

Bees are pretty simple creatures. They spend most of their days helping flowers bone, and the rest of their time stinging things and dying because of it. But for some reason, a hive of hundreds of thousands of bees can function as an intelligent, cohesive unit, even though not a single bee is capable of seeing beyond its own tasks or thinking anything resembling complex thought. Millions of pollen-gathering missions are organized, carried out, and relayed back to the hive without a thought more complex than “get honey, sting large bear-shaped object”. Welcome to the world of Swarm Intelligence.

First articulated in 1989, the idea roughly goes like this: with the proper algorithms in place, a group of stupid individuals with no knowledge of the overall system will nonetheless be able to carry out its mandates. So sort of like elections (ba-dum tish). People in charge of large, complex and frustratingly unmanageable systems like power grids have slowly begun to recognize the usefulness of Swarm Intelligence, and are currently using it to intelligently manage electrical loads with minimal human intervention.



Aquaporin is a Great Water Filter

Aquaporins are a class of proteins in your cell membranes. Their primary function is to regulate the flow of water into and out of the cell. This is an absolutely essential function as too much water can cause a cell to burst, and too little can cause it to shrivel up like a prune. It is also essential to maintain the correct balance of various ions and solutes for the cell to function. Aquaporins are especially good at moving water quickly in and out of the cell, without letting anything else past.

If you can see where this is going, congratulations on still being awake (seriously that was some boring science stuff there). Scientists have successfully replicated the structure of aquaporins for use in water filtration. If successful, these aquaporin membranes will be rapid, relatively cheap water filtration devices that can almost perfectly filter just about anything. Importantly, the are also capable of desalinating water, a process that right now is outrageously expensive and energy-intense.



Beetles Act Out Dune

Speaking of water, filtering it is all well and good, but what do you do when you don’t have any water to begin with? The Namib desert beetle. might hold the answer. The beetle’s exoskeleton has an ingenious system for collecting moisture in an arid region that might receive a half inch of precipitation a year.

The beetle has a unique system of peaks and valleys combined with a smooth coating that traps moisture from the air and channels it toward the beetle’s mouth. The highly-efficient system ensures the beetle a livable supply of moisture plucked right out of the morning fog. Scientists at MIT recognized the potential of this system in areas with little access to water, and crafted a surface made of specialized hydrophilic and hydrophobic (attracting and repelling water, respectively) combined with a “teflon-like” material to channel airborne water much like the desert beetle. This could heavily benefit areas such as Western Sahara, where water is so scarce, it has to be shipped in at great cost from desalination plants on the coast.



Shark Skin is a Great Disinfectant

Before you go grinding up sharks Chinese wedding style, it’s not the skin itself that makes sharks strangely resistant to parasites, fungal and bacterial infections–it’s the unique surface structure. Much like the self-cleaning paint, the diamond shaped studded surface of shark skin creates an environment much like the Nakatomi tower for John McClane. There’s no place for the pests to hide out, and moving around leads to bloody injury.

Scientists managed to replicate this structure on an adhesive film, which they hope to deploy to schools, hospitals and other places where deadly germs often propagate. Which is great, considering a healthy person is not likely to contract a horrific, drug-resistant, flesh-eating bacteria like MRSA in their daily lives, unless they end up in a hospital. As if sharks weren’t already cool enough. Sharkskin has also inspired swimsuits used in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Night-time insects like nocturnal sphinx moth pollinate these plants. The plant grows between 3 and 5 feet tall. The flowers are between 0.78 to 2 inches.

Epiphyllum Oxypetalum or Dutchman’s-Pipe Cactus, is a large floral variety of cactus native from Mexico to Brazil. Plant can grow as tall as 20 feet (6.1 m) in height. It’s branches are dark green and it requires moist soil. It grows in late spring and early summer, somewhere around May 30th. It blooms for only 1-2 days. Individual flowers can be up to 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide. It opens as the sun goes down. It has a very deep and fresh fragrance which spreads as soon as it blooms.
